:life-size statue of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan unveiled in Newport Beach last month has been removed after vandals allegedly attempted to take it down using a rope and a truck.

The attempted theft of the bronze statue from Bonita Canyon Sports Park occurred early on Sunday.

It was found by authorities broken off its foundation and leaning forward with other damage. Police are looking for the suspect.

Local police received a call at approximately 5:30am on Sunday of a vandalism in progress at Bonita Canyon Sports Park.

A witness reported seeing a suspect attaching a chain or rope to the base of the statue and the extended cab of a tan pick-up truck and attempting to pull it down from its foundation.

The suspect was last seen fleeing into the Port Streets neighbourhood but was not found by police.

City crews removed the statue from its concrete base for repairs.

Police Sergeant Kirk Jacobi told OCRegister.com: 'Either someone really didn't like Reagan or they tried to steal it so they can sell it for scrap metal.'

The statue was dedicated on October 9, after nearly a year of controversy.

Residents debated whether the park should be named for the nation's 40th president and former governor of California, and if, in fact, the statue should be erected at all.

The final structure, proposed by Newport Beach City Councilman Keith Curry, finally went up in honour of the 100th anniversary of the politician's birth.

It was commissioned for about $60,000 raised through private donations.

Officials have not released an estimate of how much it will cost to repair the statue.

Police continue to search for suspects.
Thieves who stole railway cable worth just £140 ended up leaving commuters stuck for a miserable 50 hours in 160 stationary trains, it has been revealed.

Police say last week's theft from a rail line in Crossgates, Leeds ended up costing more than £46,000 in delays and repairs.

British Transport Police has today appealed for witnesses to the incident where a small amount of cable was stolen but had devastating results.

Pc Linda Rix said the theft caused a large circuit failure meaning trains were stuck until officers and engineers attended the scene and discovered cable had been cut and taken from the line.

'After an investigation, the stolen cable was established to be worth approximately £140 to the thieves,' she said.

'As a result of the theft, 160 trains were affected causing 2,955 minutes of delays, costing the rail industry £46,560.

'Forensic teams analysed cable ends, which were found discarded close to the area, and police are now appealing for anyone with information to come forward.'

Chief Inspector Derek O'Mara, of British Transport Police's dedicated cable squad, Operation Leopard, said: 'The risks these thieves took for just £140 in their pocket is astonishing. It had a massive impact to train services and the rail industry to rectify and amend the damage caused, as well as delaying thousands of passengers - many of whom may have been travelling to important appointments.

'What thieves don't realise is that they are working on live cable, carrying up to 25,000 volts, which can cause extensive burns. They could have been seriously injured or even killed for their mindless efforts.

'The act of stealing, or attempting to steal, cable is extremely dangerous and anyone who has any information about the incident, or who saw any suspicious activity in the area is asked to come forward.'

Warrick Dent, area general manager for Network Rail, added: 'Once again our railway has come under serious attack from thieves bringing misery to thousands of passengers. Our engineers worked to resume services as quickly as possible and we will be working with British Transport Police to catch those responsible.

'Cable theft is a serious issue - disrupting and delaying both passengers and essential freight deliveries. We will look for the courts to reflect the misery caused by these individuals when they are caught and brought for sentencing.'
Toppled after 90 years: Vicar Kevin Scott at The Old Malden monument, in Surrey, after thieves pushed it the ground to steal a strip of lead worth £5

OLD MALDEN, SURREY Thieves toppled the 90-year-old oak monument to the dead of the Great War so they could steal a strip of lead worth less than £5 two months before Remembrance Day.

They climbed on top of the historic memorial at the church of St John the Baptist in Old Malden, sending it crashing to the ground causing severe damage. Police sergeant Rob Baker said: ‘The lack of respect and callous nature of this incident has caused the local community significant concern and it remains a top priority for my officers.’

Police are demanding tighter restrictions on the dealers to halt the tide of thefts ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

British Transport Police is in charge of tackling metal theft across the country because the main traffic is in stolen cables from railway lines. It says action is needed to ‘choke’ off the market.

It also called for greater regulation to prevent scrap dealers, who are required only to register with their local authority to operate, melting down the nation’s heritage for profit.

Mrs Moreton echoed the call for tighter regulations, adding: ‘Anything that stops the theft of such an important part of our heritage can only be good.’ She added: ‘It’s very sad to see memorials being targeted and the names of those who have given their lives for their country being lost.

‘It’s very disappointing when people do this and those people need to take a long, hard look at themselves and see what they’re actually doing.

‘If people don’t take the opportunity to campaign and fight against the thieves, our nation’s war memorials will be lost to future generations along with the names of those who gave their lives for their countries.’

The Mail reported yesterday that the 100,000 war memorials in Britain are being targeted by thieves and vandals at the rate of one every other day. Thieves steal the brass plaques to dealers, who melt the metal down to fuel the worldwide demand for scarce metals.

Mrs Moreton said: ‘There haven’t been many convictions for thefts from war memorials. It’s very difficult to trace where scrap metal came from and lots of memorials are in very isolated places.’

The trust, which is supported by the Duchess of Cornwall, is campaigning for every war monument in Britain to be marked with the invisible chemical Smart Water, which can be seen under ultra-violet light and acts as a deterrent to thieves. Simon Lubin, of the British Transport Police, said that the focus also needed to be on regulation of the dealers.

Here, the Mail highlights some of the most disturbing memorial thefts.
Callous brothers left friend to die beside railway after he was electrocuted as they stole copper cablePair visited a scrap dealer as friend lay undiscovered

Two brothers who left their friend to die when he was electrocuted as they stole copper cable from beside a railway were behind bars tonight.

John and Jason Tusting, 26 and 23, sold the metal for just £340 within hours of father-of-two James Smith suffering a fatal shock inside an electricity substation.

The 28-year-old's body lay undiscovered for more than two hours while the emergency services carried out a search of the area.

Jason Tusting had anonymously called 999 but lied about the exact location of the incident.

The break-in caused £110,000 worth of damage, but the copper was sold for just £342 at scrap dealer GH Metals in Peckham, south-east London, Blackfriars Crown Court heard.

The brothers made the sale shortly after railway staff finally came across Smith's body in the substation near Sydenham station at around 7am on December 4 last year.

Electrocuted: James Payne died on railway tracks

Mr Smith had suffered horrific burns and was discovered lying near a pile of bricks, naked from the waist up with his mobile phone and car keys taken from his pockets.

John Tusting had to be taken to hospital by ambulance at around 7.23am suffering from 'severe' burns on his left arm and shoulder sustained in the burglary.

He told paramedics he had been attacked overnight by three men, who had doused him with petrol and set him on fire. But he later told doctors he had been drunk and simply woke up with the injuries.

Jason Tusting, of Honor Oak, south London; and John Tusting, of Lee, also south London, pleaded guilty to burglary and criminal damage recklessly endangering life.

Jason Tusting has also admitted perverting the course of justice.

The brothers were due to be sentenced this afternoon, however, Judge John Hillen adjourned sentenced until August 12, and ordered the Probation Service to produce reports to address whether they represented a 'danger' to the public and should face indefinite jail terms.

Remanding the men in custody, he said: 'Custody is the only option, and it is really a question of what form the custody takes - one may be looking at a longer term for the protection of the public.'

The court heard Jason, giving the false name 'Josh Tusting', rang 999 at 5.32am to say he had been waiting for a train at Sydenham station and seen a 'flash of light' and a man fall to the trackside.

But the location he described was 'some distance' from the substation, the court heard.

The substation's power supply had been tripped two minutes earlier at 5.30am when the cables were cut.

Jason Tusting admitted his real identity after being tracked down by a suspicious officer, who then asked to check his hand for a distinctive scar recorded on Jason's police file.

Simon Taylor, prosecuting, said the brothers had 'tried to conceal their activities and in effect created a false crime scene, thereby delaying the discovery of the body.'

Jason's DNA was later found on Smith's lips - suggesting he had tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation before fleeing from the scene.

The court heard Network Rail had 'experienced a 300 per cent increase in the theft of copper and other metals' since 2004, at a total cost of £15m.

Mr Taylor said: 'It is quite clear that the damage caused during the course of the commission of these economic crimes has the effect of endangering the lives of others.

'This is a feature of these crimes that was starkly and tragically demonstrated in this particular case, where one of the gang of thieves died as a consequence of being electrocuted.

'The defendants appear on the indictment not because they are directly to blame for the death but because they created a hazard that left the lives of others in danger - a risk that is only too sadly evidenced by the death of their colleague.'

The damage resulted in the closure of the main commuter line between London and Kent coast for almost an hour.

James Rouse, defending, insisted John Tusting had made attempts to save Smith, and had suffered as a result.

'He grabbed him in an effort to pull him away, thereby causing extremely serious injuries to himself,' he said.

'He was in hospital for five days straight after the incident and, when the ambulance technician arrived at his home, when asked how painful his injuries were, he said "10 out of 10".'

The illiterate thief, whose criminal record includes convictions for burgling a primary school, stealing a car and possessing a knife in public, was arrested on December 16 in the burns unit of Lewisham Hospital.

Jason Tusting's record includes criminal damage, affray, theft and drink-driving.

His barrister Nick Robinson said he had also made attempts to seek help after the break-in, calling for an ambulance and trying to administer CPR.

But Judge John Hillen said the 999 call was misleading 'causing operatives looking for the body to put themselves a risk'.

‘This is why you shouldn’t steal copper cable!’ Thief’s warning as he suffers horrific burns after being hit by 22,000 volts

'Everyone thinks it's so easy and they have no idea how stupid they're being'

Surge in cable thefts triggered by the huge prices being paid for copper and other metals

These are the horrendous injuries suffered by a man after he was hit by 22,000 volts while stealing copper cable from an electricity sub-station.

James Sorby, 22, was burnt so badly that his daughter was unable to recognise him. He had been trying to take cabling from an electricity sub-station in a disused Post Office sorting room in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

But before he could even touch the cable, a massive charge jumped a gap to his body and he suffered severe burns to his face and hands, a weakened heart, lost partial sight in his left eye and lost movement in one of his hands.
James Sorby, 22, was burnt so badly that his daughter was unable to recognise him. He had been trying take cabling from an electricity sub-station in a disused Post Office sorting room in Leeds, West Yorks.

A surge in cable thefts across the country has been triggered by the huge prices being paid for copper and other metals, many of the products leaving Britain for use in India and the Middle East.

Sorby endured weeks in hospital where he underwent five operations and skin grafts and he faces more surgery, including a hair transplant over a skull wound which exposed his brain. This was caused by the electricity exiting his body.

A surge in cable thefts across the country has been triggered by the huge prices being paid for copper and other metals, many of the products leaving Britain for use in India and the Middle East

He claims the most traumatic moment of his whole ordeal came when his young daughter did not recognise him because of the burns.

He said: 'It wasn't until she heard my voice she realised I was her dad.

'It was horrible to realise your own daughter didn't know who you were.

'I think I've been given a second chance, but I've got to live with what I've done every day. Every single day I'm reminded.'

He has now issued a stark warning to others thinking of stealing cable. He said: 'I have been through so much and am still going through it.

'My message is "Don't do it". Before I did this, it was just an idea and there was no danger to it.

'Everyone thinks it's so easy and they have no idea how stupid they're being.'

He added: 'When you think of getting involved in something like this, you don't think of the danger.

'Now I've been through this I would not wish it on anyone. I've been through five months of agony, and this has changed my life forever.'

Sorby, who had a six-month trial as a second row forward with an Australian rugby side, says he is keen to turn his life around following the incident which nearly killed him.
Scarred: The thief shows the damage to his hands caused by the massive electric shock

He said: 'My goal is just to be there for my daughter when she needs me, to get a straight job and possibly begin coaching rugby to young lads.

'That way I can teach them not just how to play rugby, but how to behave off the pitch.

'Talking about it is one way I can put things right. 'I'm still here and that's the most important thing.'

Sorby, of Leeds, pleaded guilty at Leeds Magistrates Court to trespass with intent to steal.

Prosecutor Vicky Trueman said that despite danger warnings, Sorby and two others went to steal cabling from a sub-station on January 27.

But he was electrocuted before he had a chance to steal and his accomplices called an ambulance.

Exposed copper cabling and flashmarks were later found, along with blood identified as Sorby's. He was arrested on May 23 after five months in hospital and accepted the offence.

Abbi Whelan, mitigating, told the court the consequences for Sorby were 'catastrophic' and he had assisted the police who were eager to alert people to the dangers of the increasing number of cable thefts.

Speaking after his court case, Sorby said he remembered nothing after entering the warehouse.

He said: 'The next thing I remember is the ambulance arriving, I was in a bad way.

'They cut off my clothes, there was blood everywhere.

'The pain was unbelievable and the doctors told me I only survived because I am so young and fit.'

The incident had a major impact on his mother Diane and the rest of the family, some of whom flew from Australia to be at his bedside.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Oddy said: 'Metal theft is increasingly popular because of its rising value, but with it comes the life-endangering risks that thieves are taking for the sake of making some quick money.

'James Sorby is extremely lucky to be alive to tell the tale. I hope his story makes people take his advice and think twice before getting involved in metal theft.'

PRESSURE FOR LAW CHANGE ON DEALERS

Scrap metal theft across the UK has hit almost epidemic proportions.

Some councils have reported the theft of manhole covers, wheelchair ramps and even children's playground equipment.

Britain's railways and power supply companies are some of the hardest hit as metal prices continue to attract thieves looking for fast cash.

Rail companies are having power and signalling equipment stolen on a daily basis across the network with British Transport Police admitting number of thefts 'is huge'.

As police admit they are failing to keep up with the thefts around the country sparked by the global rise in metal prices there is growing pressure on the government to reform the 1964 Scrap Metal Dealers Act.

The coalition is considering licensing scrap metal dealers, banning them from dealing in cash and giving police powers to close rogue traders down.

Minister are considering the crackdown on the industry worth £5bn a year to the economy.

It is thought that more than 15,000 tonnes of metal is stolen in the UK each year.

School puts up warning sign to tell THIEVES they could be injured if they steal copper from the roof
Warning: Teachers put up the notice at Whitmore Junior School, Basildon, to avoid being sued by thieves

Damage: Copper was stolen from Whitmore's roof four times during the course of a week

The situation is even more absurd because the criminals are the reason the roof is insecure in the first place as they have been stripping off the valuable copper that covers it.

Parents at the school, in Basildon, Essex, attacked the bizarre health and safety ruling. One, who asked not to be named, said: ‘Just when you think the world cannot get any more crazy, something like this happens. The lunatics have taken over the asylum.

‘We should celebrate if one of this gang falls through the roof and breaks a leg, not be worrying about having to pay them compensation.’

Another, who has an eight-year-old son at the school, added: ‘It’s common sense to know that walking on a roof is dangerous. If someone chooses to do it, that’s their look-out.’

Enlarge Warning: A notice informing parents nearby Willows School had closed for the day

The copper thieves struck at the school four times last week, making off with huge sections worth thousands of pounds and leaving the school with a huge repair bill.

Until contractors have completed the work, it has been advised to put up the signs which are printed on laminated A4 sheets and warn: ‘This roof is unsafe – do not climb.’

Iris Cerny, executive head at the mixed community school, which has around 200 pupils aged seven to 11, said: ‘Should anyone go on to our roof in the meantime and hurt themselves, even as a result of taking the rest of our copper, we are going to be liable for injury. So we have had to put notices up.’

An Essex County Council spokesman said any property where work is being carried out needs to have the ‘correct signage in place’.

He added: ‘This ensures that everyone is aware of any possible danger and the council would not be liable for injury caused by not adhering to these signs.’

Other schools in the area have been targeted, including Willows Primary School, which had to close for the day on Tuesday after £25,000 of copper was stolen from its roof
Scrap bandits return as commodities boomBy Stephen Womack

Scrap metal thieves are again targeting homeowners, businesses and motorists to cash in on soaring prices.

Targeted: Thieves stole lead from part of Mike Smith's roof

Gold has hit record levels and last week was trading at $1,395 (£861) an ounce.

But signs of economic recovery, strong demand from Asia and renewed speculation have also helped to drive the prices of other metals higher.

Copper, for example, is trading at about $8,599 (£5,306) a ton in London, more than 166 per cent up on its low point at the end of 2008, while lead is trading at about $2,490 a ton, double its 2008 low.

And scrap platinum, which is found inside the catalytic converters of car exhausts as well as in some jewellery, was last week selling for about £793 an ounce.

Previous high prices prompted a spike in scrap metal thefts in the spring and summer of 2008, as Financial Mail reported at the time.

As prices slumped in the face of world recession, crooks sought richer pickings elsewhere. But the rebound in metal prices this year means motorists, households and businesses are again being targeted.

British Transport Police last month called for new powers to help it tackle the growing problem as thieves target rail networks for copper cabling. Deputy Chief Constable Paul Crowther says: 'With the high price of metal on world markets at the moment, thieves who sell to conniving or unwitting dealers are getting good returns.'

Rural insurer NFU Mutual has seen a big increase in metal thefts this year. Aluminium and copper pipes and roofing lead have all been taken. Catalytic converters, especially on vans and 4x4 vehicles, are another target.

NFU Mutual spokesman Tim Price says: 'Metal of all varieties is very much on the thieves' shopping list.'

He says higher gold and silver prices have changed the way burglars operate. 'Now when they break in it is not just consumer electronics that are taken,' he says. 'They make a beeline for any jewellery, no matter how old, because of the scrap value.'

Insurer esure has also seen a spike in the thefts of jewellery. Spokesman Adrian Webb says: 'We have seen a definite rise in metal thefts from homes - both gold and silver jewellery. Thieves will always follow easy money.'

Big advertising drives by postal gold dealers and High Street jewellers who want to buy scrap gold have helped to raise awareness that even unfashionable or broken jewellery has value.

Another common target is roofing lead. Mike Smith and fiancee Dawn Cokell returned home from a weekend away to find that lead had been stripped from a section of the roof of their three-bedroom semi-detached house.

Mike, a civil servant, says: 'The roof above the bay window on the front of the house had been stripped. They took a sheet of lead about 6ft long and 3ft wide.'

And the couple, both 26, from Whitefield, Manchester, were not alone. Mike says: 'Talking to neighbours we found out that four houses in the area had been targeted on the Saturday night in the same way. Then a week later, the thieves came back and did the same on a few more properties.'

Mike and Dawn, a human resources officer for a construction firm, told the police about the thefts but no one has been caught yet. The couple have decided to replace the missing lead with roofing felt, even though it may not look quite as smart.

'The worry is that you can spend £400 on the lead - and then have it stolen again,' says Mike.

Churches and other historic buildings are particularly vulnerable.Specialist insurer Ecclesiastical has seen 1,596 claims for metal theft in the year to September, costing more than £3.5 million. While this is less than the £8.5 million annual losses in 2008 when metal crime was at its peak, losses are already 60 per cent higher than in the whole of 2009.

David Bonehill, Ecclesiastical's claims and risk services director, says: 'We see no sign of claims reducing. There is a direct correlation between the value of these metals on world markets and the number of claims received.

'About four thefts of metal take place every day among our customers and this is four incidents too many.'

The RAC says it has seen an increase in the past few months in patrols being called out to rescue drivers who have had the catalytic converters removed from their exhausts by metal thieves.

Each catalytic converter typically contains between three and seven grams of platinum, worth anything up to £175 on the scrap market. But the thefts leave the vehicle useless.

Patricularly at risk are 4x4s because they have bigger exhausts and it is easier for a thief to slide underneath to get at the exhaust without jacking up the vehicle. The replacement cost of a new exhaust system can be up to £1,000 on bigger models.

Hard line: Transport police want powers to halt metal snatchers

Rail, power and communication networks are vulnerable to metal thieves. Copper cabling used for railway signalling and the power cables around transformers are both targets.

British Transport Police, which is responsible for policing the railways, reports a significant rise in metal theft this year. It has seen more than 1,800 cable thefts in 2010.

Last month, British Transport Police called for new legislation to make it harder for the crooks to sell on metal.

Police want scrap metal dealers to be forced to collect better records about their customers, with tougher ID checks similar to those used by banks to stop moneylaundering. And cash payments would be banned, with money for scrap transferred to only named accounts. Dealers who refuse to comply could be shut down on the spot.

British Transport Police Deputy Chief Constable Paul Crowther says: 'Police can close bars or clubs if the terms of their licence are breached. We want to see whether similar legislation could help us to tackle metal theft.'
Kalau anda bawa laju janganlah jadi riak berbangga.
Jangan lupa diri makna nya:

fikirkanlah..

kenapa kita sembahyang dan beramal?
kenapa kita beriman supaya kita....

Scientists have found that post-menopausal women can protect themselves against osteoporosis and bone fractures by simply eating around 10 of them a day.

Florida State and Oklahoma State academics proved that dried plums are far better than figs, dates, dried strawberries, dried apples, and raisins for improving bone density.

Health benefits: Prunes are the best thing to eat to maintain bone density

It appears they suppress the breakdown of bones, which tends to speed as people age.

And as post-menopausal women are most prone to osteoporosis they are encouraging people to eat more of the divisive dried fruit.

'Over my career, I have tested numerous fruits, including figs, dates, strawberries and raisins, and none of them come anywhere close to having the effect on bone density that dried plums, or prunes, have,' said Bahram H. Arjmandi, Florida State professor and chairman of the U.S. Department of Nutrition, Food and Exercise Sciences.

'All fruits and vegetables have a positive effect on nutrition, but in terms of bone health, this particular food is exceptional.'

Arjmandi and a group of researchers tested two groups of post-menopausal women.

Proved: Bahram Arjmandi (pictured) lead the research

Over a year, the first group, consisting of 55 women, was instructed to consume 100 grams of dried plums - about 10 prunes - per day.

While the second - a comparative control group of 45 women - was told to consume 100 grams of dried apples.

All of the study's participants also received daily doses of calcium and vitamin D.

The group that consumed dried plums had significantly higher bone mineral density in the ulna, one of two long bones in the forearm, and the spine, in comparison with the group that ate dried apples.

The group's research, has been published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

In the United States about 8 million women have osteoporosis because of the sudden cessation of ovarian hormone production at the onset of menopause. About 2 million men also have osteoporosis.

'In the first five to seven post-menopausal years, women are at risk of losing bone at a rate of three to five percent per year,' Mr Arjmandi said.

'However, osteoporosis is not exclusive to women and, indeed, around the age of 65, men start losing bone with the same rapidity as women.'

Arjmandi encourages people who are interested in maintaining or improving their bone health to take note of the extraordinarily positive effect that dried plums have on bone density.

'Don't wait until you get a fracture or you are diagnosed with osteoporosis and have to have prescribed medicine,' he said.

'Do something meaningful and practical beforehand. People could start eating two to three dried plums per day and increase gradually to perhaps six to 10 per day. Prunes can be eaten in all forms and can be included in a variety of recipes.'

::A businessman who died while riding a Segway scooter built by his own company has left his fortune of more than £340 million to his family.

Jimi Heselden, 62, was found in the River Wharfe at Boston Spa, near Wetherby, West Yorkshire, after accidentally plunging from a 42ft cliff in September last year. His Segway was found nearby.

Today, it was revealed that Mr Heselden, who was one of the 400 richest people in the UK, had left an estate of £343,172,206 to his widow Julie and other family members.

Jimi Heselden, the multi-millionaire owner of the Segway company, died in a freak accident when he rode one of the high-tech two-wheel machines off a cliff

The businessman made his fortune when his Leeds-based firm Hesco Bastion developed the revolutionary 'blast wall' basket, which protect soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, as a replacement for traditional sandbags.

The units have been used to protect soldiers in every major conflict since the first Gulf War and are seen as one of the UK's most successful defence exports.

They are also used for a range of non-military functions including flood management and erosion control.

In December 2009, Mr Heselden led a British team which bought the US-based Segway firm, which makes and distributes the distinctive two-wheeled, self-balancing scooters.

Tragedy: The spot where the accident happened

But he suffered a freak accident while riding one of his vehicles and was found dead in a river after plunging 40 feet over a limestone cliff near his home.

Millionaire: Jimi Heselden

He was riding a rugged country version of the two-wheeled Segway, which are banned on British roads for safety reasons, but are legal on private land.

Twice-married Mr Heselden had four grown children. The former miner, who left school when he was 15, was known as much for his charity giving as he was for his massive fortune.

The Leeds Community Foundation said he had donated £23 million to causes in his home city since 2008 and he was also closely linked to the Help For Heroes charity, which supports injured military personnel.

Today, a statement released on behalf of the trustees of Mr Heselden's estate said: 'It can be confirmed that Jimi left an estate of £343,172,206 which he has bequeathed to his widow Julie and other family members.

'The estate consists substantially of Jimi's controlling interest in Hesco Bastion Ltd.

'The family wishes that Jimi's legacy will live on in the many charities and good causes he supported during his lifetime.'

The scene: Mr Heselden died after his Segway plunged 42ft from a rocky path and into Jackdaw Crag, located on the River Wharfe, West Yorkshire

Mr Heselden's death came just a week after he became one of the UK's most generous philanthropists, giving away £10million to a foundation he set up in 2008

Last month an inquest heard that his death was probably caused by an 'act of courtesy' to a dog walker on a footpath, a coroner heard.

Sean Christie told the coroner he was walking near Jackdaw Crag, by the river, when he saw Mr Heselden at the top of a steep incline apparently weighing up how he was going to tackle the sloping footpath on his X2, which is a rough terrain version of the Segway.

Mr Christie said that, from 40ft to 50ft away, he saw the businessman move a short distance backwards in a movement he assumed was to make room for him to pass.

Leeds Coroners Court was told the path he was on was just five feet from the 42ft drop and tree branches in the area may also have contributed to his loss of control.

Mr Heselden is thought to have fallen on to the bank of the river before ending up in the water where he was found dead by Mr Christie.

Experts found no fault with the Segway

Tragedy: Flowers laid by the River Wharfe, at Boston Spa, West Yorkshire where Jimi Heselden died

Mr Heselden had bought the European licence for the Segway a few years before but was better known as a philanthropist and the successful owner of Hesco Bastion, which builds containers used to protect troops around the world. Camp Bastion in Afghanistan is named after his firm, the inquest heard.

Blast proff: A British soldier walks past a wall built from Hesco concertainer gabions at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan

Recording an verdict of accidental death, West Yorkshire Coroner David Hinchliff told Mr Heselden's family: 'I think it's probable - I think typical of Jimi and the type of man he was - he held back and waited as an act of courtesy to allow Mr Christie more room.

'In so doing, he's attempted to reverse the Segway back. As a result of that he's got into difficulty.'

Mr Hinchliff added: 'It's such a shame and tragedy that such a great man should have died in this way.

'The fact is that Jimi was a local lad made good. Not made good because of any silver spoon in his mouth but because of his own hard work.'

Accident: The millionaire philanthropist was riding a rugged country version of the Segway, like this X2 Adventure model, when he went over a cliff and into a river

Mr Heselden left school at 15 to become a miner but lost his job in the cuts that followed the bitter 1984 strike.

He used his redundancy money to found his company, HESCO Bastion. It manufactures gabions, portable wire cages that can be lined and filled with earth and sand.

They were not a new idea, but he developed a way to mass manufacture the collapsible wire mesh containers with a heavy duty fabric liner in a concertina form that expanded into a long wall and could be laid quickly.

Up to several hundred metres of barrier is ready for filling within minutes

This map of Boston Spa shows where Mr Heselden was found

At first he sold them to water companies to shore up the sides of canals.

But the ‘concertainers’ proved to be adept at stopping bullets, missiles and suicide bombers and have become standard military equipment for Nato as well as American and British forces.

Between 1998 and 2003 the Pentagon alone bought more than £50million worth of the flat-packed walls, which can be found throughout Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr Heselden, who was awarded an OBE in 2006, gave £1.5million to the Help For Heroes fund three years ago. His company also sponsored an Armed Forces charity concert at Twickenham.::

Cheese on toast, a square of dark chocolate, or a spicy tikka masala — we all get cravings for particular foods.

But while these are often to do with your mood at that moment, a long-term craving could be more significant.

The Mail this week reported the story of 59-year-old Elsie Campbell, whose breast cancer was detected after she developed an unusual appetite for salad.

The mother-of-two was eating four lettuces a day, prompting her husband Jim, a research scientist, to investigate.

He worked out that lettuce contains a natural chemical called sulforaphane, which can attack cancer cells and which breast cancer sufferers often lack.

He correctly guessed his wife’s addiction meant she was suffering from the disease. Jim has since set up question myhealth.com, providing information about other odd symptoms.

So, what could your craving be trying to tell you?

A craving for Marmite could mean you are suffering from heart arrhythmia or atrial fibrillation

CRAVING: MARMITE

Possible ailment: Heart arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation

Marmite is rich in B-vitamins, which are essential for breaking down carbohydrates for energy. B-vitamins also maintain nerves, skin and brain.

There are eight different types of B-vitamin and a deficiency of any one of them can result in a range of conditions, including heart palpitations, arrhythmia or fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat), chronic fatigue, irritability and poor concentration.

So love it or loathe it, a craving for Marmite could be your body’s way of trying to make up for a deficiency.

CRAVING: CRISPS, CHIPS AND SALTY FOODS

Possible ailment: Thyroid or adrenal gland problems

Shona Wilkinson, head nutritionist at The Nutri Centre, London, says: ‘Severe stress affects the adrenal glands.

‘If someone is very stressed, they stop producing the correct amounts of hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol and aldosterone. This can disrupt the salt balance in the body and explains why some people have salt cravings.’

It might also mean you have an iodine deficiency. This is linked to thyroid problems, says Jeannette Jackson, a nutritional biochemist.

An underactive thyroid can cause lethargy, constipation, weight gain and depression, while an overactive thyroid can cause weight loss, anxiety and irregular periods.

Cravings for ice could point to possible anaemia

CRAVING: ICE

Possible ailment: Anaemia

A craving for ice may be linked to anaemia, which is when the body lacks red blood cells because it does not have enough iron to produce them.

The main symptom is a lack of energy. According to scientists at the Mayo Clinic in America, people crave ice as a way of numbing the tongue pain and inflammation that can be caused by anaemia.

Research has found ice tastes good to some people who are iron deficient, although why is not clear.

CRAVING: FIZZY DRINKS

Possible ailment: Calcium deficiency

Dying for a can of something fizzy? There could be an unexpected reason. It may be due to craving calcium, says Shona Wilkinson.

‘Fizzy drinks leach calcium from the bones, so if the body needs calcium quickly, a fizzy drink is a quick way to get some released into the body.

‘This is very detrimental for bone health, however, so it’s much better to get your calcium from dark green leafy vegetables or low-fat dairy products.’

CRAVING: CURRY

Possible ailment: Parkinson's, zinc deficiency

Zinc is important for your skin, as it promotes healing. It has also been linked to our sense of taste.

When zinc was given to rats deficient in the mineral, it increased the number of taste buds on the tongue.

So it’s thought that if you’re craving strong flavours such as curry, you may be deficient in zinc and as a result not have a good supply of fully functioning tastebuds.

Possible ailments for the apparent addiction to curry include Parkinson's and zinc deficiency

Low zinc has also been linked to conditions including Parkinson’s. According to scientists at the National Institute of Health and Science on Ageing in Italy, this is because Parkinson’s disease has been linked to oxidative stress — damage to the body’s cells from the toxins found in everyday life.

Zinc is thought to protect against this damage, and so a lack of it may hamper the cells’ ability to deal with these poisons. Smoking has also been shown to deplete zinc, which may be why some smokers also crave intensely flavoured foods.

CRAVING: BREAD AND PASTA

Possible ailment: depression

People who cut back on carbs are susceptible to mood swings, according to researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston.

High-protein diets can lower levels of the feelgood hormone serotonin, but carbs raise them, helping you feel happy and combating low mood.

A desire to eat soil could point to low minerals in pregnancy or coeliac disease

CRAVING: SOIL

Possible ailment: Low minerals in pregnancy, Coeliac disease

A craving for soil or clay is part of a syndrome called pica, sometimes seen in pregnant women, explains dietitian Nigel Denby, of grub4life.co.uk.

‘If a pregnant woman has pica, it suggests she may need more of the minerals found in her particular craving. Iron tends to be the most craved mineral at this time. Iron, copper, magnesium and zinc are all found in soil, for example,’ he says.

Other research published in the American Journal Of Clinical Nutrition has linked pica to undiagnosed coeliac disease (a malfunctioning gut) in children and it has also been linked to poor diet and heavy periods.

CRAVING: CHOCOLATE

Possible ailment: Depression, stress, premenstrual tension

So why do you crave the sweet stuff when you’re working on a deadline or feeling down in the dumps?

Well, compounds found in chocolate called alkaloids may help to raise the levels of serotonin — the mood-boosting hormone.

Chocolate is also a source of magnesium and B-vitamins, which are used by the body in energy production, meaning it can help give us energy when we’re under pressure.

Chocolate can point to problems of depression, stress or premenstrual tension

A small Swiss study in the Journal of Proteome Research found eating 40g of dark chocolate every day for two weeks reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol in people who’d been battling with pressures.

Craving chocolate may also be a sign of premenstrual tension. Some women also find themselves lacking in magnesium at this time, and chocolate is high in the mineral, says Shona Wilkinson.

500ml whole milk

25g dried milk powder

3 tbsp live, plain, whole milk yogurt

Put the milk in a saucepan and whisk in the dried milk powder. Place over a medium heat until the milk steams and bubbles appear around the edge. Pour into a warmed mixing bowl and leave to cool until a thermometer reads 46C (or, in the absence of a thermometer, dip in a scrupulously clean finger and if you can keep it there for 20 seconds without causing undue pain, it'll be about right).

Whisk in the live yogurt, then cover the bowl with a lid or clingfilm, wrap it in a clean towel and put it somewhere warm - an airing cupboard or above a radiator, say. Alternatively, pour it into a warmed, wide-mouthed Thermos flask.

Check the yogurt after six to eight hours, or leave it overnight. If it's thickened and looks set, pour it into a clean, airtight container and refrigerate.
Not so long ago, yogurt was jammed full of sugar, colour and fruit flavourings, and dished up in a plastic carton as a toddler-pleasing pud; or, in its unadulterated form, it was seen as some kind of cranky health food. In fact, those less tolerant of alternative lifestyles still let fly with accusations of "knitting with yogurt".

How silly. Because, to me, the best live natural yogurt is a dairy staple that's every bit as useful as milk, cream or butter. It's a key ingredient in the River Cottage kitchen, and we're as likely to use it in savoury dishes as in sweet ones. We mix it with cream in fruity fools, pannacottas and ice-creams, not because it's some kind of virtuous substitute, but because its tang takes the heavy edge off cream and enhances rather than masks the flavour of fruit. We use it to moisten cakes and breads. We mix it with goat's cheese and herbs in dips. We swirl it in to finish soups and garnish stews. And we even use it to marinate meat.

Far from being an invention of Tom and Barbara Good, 60s earth mothers or 70s kagoulies, yogurt is a truly ancient food - humankind has been eating it for thousands of years, and in many societies it has an almost mythic status. The pharaohs feasted on it, Genghis Khan and his armies fortified themselves with it, and the legendary longevity of people living in the Balkans is ascribed to their tucking into the stuff at every opportunity. Yogurt is thought to be beneficial for everything from gastrointestinal complaints to eczema. The word "yogurt" is of Turkish origin, but in ancient Assyria it was called lebney, which means life.

And, anyway, why wouldn't you want to add a little culture to your kitchen? Yogurt is packed with calcium, protein and B vitamins, so it's the perfect way to start the day. For breakfast, it's great in fruit smoothies or serve it, as the Greeks do, with rivulets of runny honey (toasted almonds and/or bananas make a meal of it). For an early summer lunch, try it stirred with lots of chopped herbs or a dollop or two of fruity chutney, with fresh vegetable crudités and crusty bread or grilled pitta on which to pile it. At supper time, it cools down curries or adds depth and edge to a sauce or to the liquor of a stew. To ensure yogurt doesn't split when you add it to hot food, use a full-fat (whole milk) version and try whisking a little of the hot liquid into the yogurt before stirring it into the cooking pot.

On hot days, yogurt makes a great cooling, soothing drink. The Turks swear by the rejuvenating properties of ayran, which is simply half iced water and half yogurt, whisked or blended together with a pinch of salt. It may sound a little ascetic, but it's powerfully refreshing.
Four things to do with homemade yogurt

· Take a handful of good muesli, mix with a grated apple and the juice of a freshly squeezed orange. Leave to soak for 10 minutes, then serve with a good dollop of yogurt and a sprinkling of sugar or honey.

· Try making çilbir, Turkish breakfast eggs. Mash a clove of garlic with a good pinch of sea salt and whisk this into about 300ml of thick yogurt. Melt 40g of butter with half a teaspoon of sweet, smoked paprika, remove from the heat and leave to infuse while you poach some eggs. When the eggs are ready, spoon some yogurt on to each plate, top with the eggs and pour over some of the paprika butter. Grind on a little black pepper, sprinkle on a little more salt and even some finely chopped mint, and serve at once.

· Mix the yogurt with a teaspoon of sea salt and strain through a muslin-lined sieve set over a bowl in the fridge for about 24 hours. Roll the thickened yogurt into balls and leave to dry out for a few hours in the fridge. Transfer to a container, pour over some olive oil and add some garlic and thyme. Serve spread over toast or mashed into baked potatoes.

· Combine 400ml of yogurt with a small chopped onion, a minced clove of garlic, a good thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, grated, a sliced green chilli, the juice of a lemon and a tablespoon of garam masala. Marinade a jointed chicken in this mixture for eight hours in the fridge, or overnight, then bake in a hot oven for 25 minutes, until cooked. Serve with lemon wedges.
Lentil soup with caraway and minted yogurt

A lovely soup created by Tim Maddams, chef at the River Cottage Canteen in Axminster. Serves six.

2 tbsp vegetable oil

2 onions, roughly diced

1 carrot, roughly diced

2 tsp coriander seeds

1 tsp caraway seeds

2 cloves garlic, minced

350g dried red lentils

1.5l water

Salt and ground black pepper

5 tbsp plain yogurt

2 tbsp fresh mint, finely chopped

Heat the oil in a saucepan and sweat the onions and carrot over a very low heat until soft, about 10 minutes. In a small frying pan over a medium heat, toast the coriander and caraway until fragrant. Grind to a powder with a pestle and mortar or spice grinder.

Add half the ground spices and the garlic to the vegetables, and stir over medium heat for a minute or two. Add the lentils and water, raise the heat, boil for 10 minutes, then cover and simmer gently for 15 minutes, or until the lentils are soft. Purée in a blender or food processor until smooth, adding more water if it seems a little thick. Return to the heat and warm through. Adjust the seasoning, using more of the ground spices and salt and pepper if desired.

In a bowl, whisk together the yogurt and mint. Serve the soup with a dollop of yogurt swirled on top.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-770777891534953847.post-73724663380532325582011-06-29T00:43:00.000+08:002011-06-29T00:43:53.985+08:00real fruit jelly

gambar hak milik dmaktam.

::Number of people with brain cancer could soar 20-fold in 20 years because of mobile phones, experts warn::By ::Lauren Paxman::

Two weeks ago, the World Health Organisation warned for the first time that mobile phones may cause cancer - urging users to limit their use.

The warning followed Interphone's research from 13 countries that found that the even just using a phone for 15 minutes a day could substatially increase the risk of a brain tumour.

But it could come to late for many mobile addicts, as it takes 15 to 20 years for primary cancers to develop - meaning the 'timebombs' could have already done their damage.

Graham Lamburn, technical manager at independent watchdog Powerwatch, said: 'This research shows that heavy users are at the biggest risk and that there is a very high increase in the risk of brain cancer from just 15 minutes of mobile phone use.

'Fifteen minutes is really not that long any more.

'Many people use their phones for much longer than that each day now. If the indications in this study are right ... then this is a potential timebomb.'

He added: 'In 20 years’ time, we could see around 20 times the number of people with brain tumours.

'It is now time that public health organisations take action.'

Elisabeth Cardis, who led the international study, said an increased risk of brain tumours, also known as gliomas, was seen in the 20 per cent of users with the highest exposure to emissions.

She said there was an increased risk of brain cancer near to phone users' ears - where the mobiles are held.

Vulnerable: There are more mobile phones than people in the UK - and the effects of phones on the young has not yet been fully investigated

Those who had used handsets for 15 minutes a day for seven years, showed a 72 per cent higher incidence of gliomas.

Experts argue these figures are so high, the results are unlikely to be down to random factors and are most likely the result of mobile use.

They also claim that the true rate of the cancer risk could be up to 10 per cent higher than the research showed.

Gliomas are fatal, even with treatment, usually killing their victims within three to five years of diagnosis.

At the moment, the incidence of brain cancer in the UK is 7.7 people per 100,000.

If the levels of brain tumours increases by 72 per cent over the next seven years, it would cause the number of UK men suffering from them to rise from the current 2,223 to 3,824.

The levels for women would rise from 1,699 to 2,922.

A spokeswoman for the Mobile Operators' Association, disputed the findings, telling the Daily Express: 'The authors stress the uncertainty of their results and that replication is needed before a causal interpretation can be made.

'A similar recent analysis involving seven European countries found no association between brain tumour location and position of phone use.

'Importantly, long-term cancer registry data shows no increase in brain tumour rates despite the growth in mobile phone usage.'

He stressed that the conclusion of the Interphone study had stated that 'the possible effects of long-term heavy use of mobile phones require further investigation'.

The spokesman said the industry was supporting further research under the auspices of the Word Health Organisation’s research agenda.::

:We tend to see narcissism as an unattractive characteristic, best left for reality TV stars.

However, studies show that taking more than a passing glance at ourselves in the mirror could be a good thing.

Last week, researchers from the Yale School of Medicine in the U.S. suggested that facial wrinkles could be a warning sign of osteoporosis, or brittle bone disease.

Facing facts: Your features really can divulge some surprising secrets about your health

They examined 114 post-menopausal women in their 40s and 50s, counting their wrinkles and then giving them X-rays. This revealed that those with the worst wrinkles had the weakest bones.

‘Bones and skin share common building blocks — collagen,’ says researcher Lubna Pal.

‘As we age, changes in collagen occur that account for wrinkles and sagging skin; they also contribute to deterioration in bone quality and quantity.’

‘The face really can divulge some surprising secrets about your health,’ adds Dr Helen Stokes-Lampard, of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

‘A flushed face, for instance, could be a sign of the heart condition mitral stenosis. As the heart valve doesn’t work properly, it can lead to increased blood pressure.’

Here, with the help of medical experts, we look at more of the surprising health problems a simple look in the mirror could reveal...

EYES Droopy eyelids, bloodshot eyes, twitching eyes, rings in the eye, pale eyelids... These could be warning signs to hayfever, anaemia or even lung cancer

Droopy eyelidsPossible cause: Bell’s Palsy, stroke, lung cancer

Conditions that affect the nerves in the face such as Bell’s Palsy can cause a weakness or paralysis in one side of the face, which may make closing the eyelid difficult and cause a drooping mouth. This is thought to occur because a virus, usually herpes, causes a nerve to become inflamed. This, in turn, interferes with the signals the brain sends to the face muscles.

Droopy eyelids are also a symptom of a stroke, along with slurred speech and weakness in the mouth and arms.

‘More rarely it can be a sign of lung cancer,’ says Dr Stokes-Lampard.

‘One particular tumour — the pan-coast tumour found at the top of the lung — can put pressure on a group of nerves that affect the eye. Accompanying symptoms include arm and shoulder pain, hand weakness and a tingling sensation in the hand.’

BLOODSHOT EYESPossible cause: Hayfever, iritis, high blood pressure

‘Red, itchy eyes are most often associated with hayfever — when the body’s immune system overreacts to a supposedly “harmless” substance such as pollen, causing an allergic reaction,’ says Dr Susan Blakeney of the Royal College of Optometrists.

Another cause is iritis, inflammation of the iris (the coloured part of the eye). Iritis is linked to the auto-immune disease Ankylosing Spondylitis, a form of arthritis where the body attacks its own tissues, including the eye.

Occasionally, the whole eye can turn red, as a result of a subconjunctival haemorrhage. Although more often simply due to accidental damage, this bleed behind the eyeball can, more rarely, be due to high blood pressure, which causes the small, fragile blood vessels to rupture.

Involuntary movement: Eye twitching - known as myokymia - is usually a sign of stress

Twitching eyePossible cause: Stress, Multiple Sclerosis

Eye twitching — known as myokymia — occurs when the muscles in the eyelid randomly spasm every few seconds. Stress can cause these tics, as it stops the body absorbing essential B vitamins, known to keep eye muscles strong; these ‘spasms’ can also occur elsewhere in the body, such as the stomach.

‘Persistent, prolonged twitching — over days or weeks — can also occur in conditions that affect the nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis,’ says Dr Stokes-Lampard.

Other symptoms of MS include a problem with balance, numbness, and blurring of vision.

RINGS IN THE EYES

Possible cause: High cholesterol, Wilson’s disease

‘White rings around the iris, the coloured part of the eye, are a well known sign of high cholesterol levels in the blood,’ says Dr Blakeney.

Cholesterol can also lead to xanthelasmas — flat, yellow-white fat deposits under the skin on or around your eyelids.

‘The hard, thick plaque is dumped in areas of the body with rich blood supplies, such as the eye,’ adds Dr Blakeney.

Rusty brown rings around the iris are a sign of Wilson’s disease, a genetic condition that prevents the body from getting rid of excess copper.

‘This first affects the liver, but then copper enters into the bloodstream, travelling to other organs, including the eyes,’ says Dr Stokes-Lampard.

‘The copper causes tissue damage, which leads to symptoms including difficulty walking, tremors, and confusion. Typically, it occurs in younger people under the age of 35.’

PALE EYELIDS

Possible cause: Anaemia

‘When the inside of the lower eyelid appears pale instead of a healthy red, you could be anaemic. This is a result of a lack of iron — integral for the making of oxygen-rich red blood cells,’ says Dr Stokes-Lampard.

Although this is particularly apparent in the eyes, you can also see it inside the mouth, the nail bed and on the cheeks.

Anaemia can make you feel weak, cold, dizzy and irritable. It is confirmed with a blood test.

Men need around 8.7mg of iron a day while women need 14.8mg a day, to compensate for blood loss during menstruation. You should, however, be able to get all you need from your daily diet. Good sources include red meat, beans, nuts and most dark-green leafy vegetables.

NOSE

Button nose: If your nose starts looking bigger than usual, it could be a sign of rosacea or giantism

ENLARGED NOSE

Possible cause: Rosacea, acromegaly

A thickening of skin around the nose — known as rhinophyma — can occur in severe cases of rosacea, says Dr Stokes-Lampard.

This common but chronic skin condition is thought to be caused by abnormalities in the blood vessels of the face; the nose becomes bulbous due to an increase in the size of the oil-secreting glands.

Avoiding possible triggers (sun, stress, spicy foods, alcohol) and medication can help with redness, but in severe cases plastic surgery may be considered.

The hormonal condition acromegaly — also known as giantism — can also lead to a change in the appearance of the nose, as well as the hands, jaw and tongue. It occurs when the pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone, stimulating the growth of muscle, cartilage and bone. This is commonly due to a benign pituitary tumour.

SKIN

FLUSHINGPossible cause: Lupus, heart disease, menopause

Redness can be a sign of the auto-immune condition, systemic lupus erythematosus. Along with joint pain and fatigue, this causes a ‘butterfly’ rash over the cheeks and nose. This is as a result of the body attacking its own tissues, including the skin, and is made worse by sunlight.

Mitral stenosis, where the mitral valve (on the left of the heart) doesn’t open fully, can also cause pinkish-purple patches as a result of the increased blood pressure throughout the body and reduced oxygen content in the blood, says Dr Iain Simpson, of the British Cardiovascular Society.

The effects are most obvious on the face, where the skin is thinner and blood vessels are packed closer together.

Red, patchy flushing on the face and neck is also a common sign of the menopause. Changes in hormone levels affect the hypothalmus, the area in the brain that regulates heat.

As a result, the brain thinks the body temperature is too high and must be lowered — it does this by dilating the blood vessels in the skin, causing redness and a hot, burning sensation.

FAT, PUFFY FACE

Possible cause: Underactive thyroid, mumps

When the thyroid isn’t producing enough of the hormone thyroxine — which controls how much energy your body uses — your metabolism slows down. This can lead to weight gain, including on the face.

Certain auto-immune conditions including Hashimoto’s disease, a damaged thyroid, and drugs for depression and heart disorders can all lead to the thyroid not working properly.

Keep an eye out: Skin conditions to look out for include flushing, colour change and itchinessKeep an eye out: Skin conditions to look out for include flushing, colour change and itchiness

Early symptoms may also include tiredness, depression and muscle aches. It can be treated with hormone replacement tablets, says Dr Stokes-Lampard.

A distinctive ‘hamster face’ is also a result of mumps, the highly contagious viral infection which has seen an increase due to the lack of uptake of the MMR vaccine.

This occurs when the parotid glands, just below the ears, become infected.

Other symptoms include pain and tenderness in the glands, loss of appetite and joint pain. Although not usually serious (apart from in young males where it can lead to infertility), mumps shares symptoms with more serious infections such as glandular fever, so it’s important to have these ruled out by your GP.

COLOUR CHANGE

Possible cause: Bronchitis, asthma, jaundice

Respiratory diseases such as bronchitis and emphysema can lead to a sallow, grey skin — simply because there isn’t enough oxygen going around the body. Sallow skin in a very young child is a good way to spot an imminent asthma attack, says Dr Stokes-Lampard.

A yellow tinge to the skin can be a sign of jaundice, caused by a build-up of bilirubin, the yellow substance produced when red blood cells are broken down. Normally it’s passed out of the body in urine.

However, if there’s something wrong with the liver, an excess amount can build up. In both cases, you should be checked out immediately.

ITCHINESSPossible cause: Eczema, pregnancy, antibiotic sensitivity

Skin that’s dry, itchy and sore is a well known symptom of eczema.

It normally occurs in areas with folds of skin such as around the eyes and ears, says Dr Catherine Hardman, a dermatologist at BMI The Clementine Churchill Hospital in London. But pregnancy can also result in itchy skin, especially in the latter stages.

It’s thought high hormone levels interfere with the secretion of bile (a yellow fluid that helps with digestion) from the liver cells. Instead of going into the digestive tract, it spills into the blood, causing intense itching.

Certain drugs — such as the antibiotic Doxyclycine used to treat chronic respiratory diseases, sexually transmitted infections and malaria — can also cause itchiness.

SPOTS IN WOMEN

Possible cause: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

The hormonal condition polycystic ovary syndrome can lead to a range of symptoms including problems getting pregnant, excessive hair growth and acne — the latter are because some women have higher levels of the male hormone testosterone, which play a role in the increase of the production of sebum, a natural oil in the skin.

What causes the condition is unknown, although there is a genetic link. Diagnosis involves a scan and blood tests.

LIPS Getting lippy: Cracks in the lips could be a sign of anaemia or diabetes

CRACKSPossible cause: Anaemia, diabetes

Open cracks or sores on the corners of the mouth, known as angular chelosis, can be a sign of anaemia — caused by a deficiency in iron.

Production of red blood cells (vital for healthy skin) slows down — which means cracks that do appear will be equally slow to recover.

Another possible cause is diabetes, a condition which leads to too much glucose in the blood.

‘The main symptoms include feeling very thirsty, going to the bathroom frequently and extreme tiredness,’ says Dr Stokes-Lampard.

‘However, these high levels also encourage the growth of candida, a type of fungus, that attacks the corners of the mouth.’

EARS Twisted shape or creased lobes could mean skin cancer or heart disease

TWISTED SHAPE

Possible cause: Skin cancer, repeated injury

Tumours — benign or malignant — on the external ear or in the inner ear canal can cause the ear to change shape or direction.

‘The ear is a common spot for basal cell carcinomas, the most common form of skin cancer,’ says Dr Hardman. ‘They are also found around the eyes and on the scalp.’

These tend to appear as white or skin-coloured, smooth, pearly nodules.

Another form of skin cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, looks like an ulcer or reddish patch of skin. If you notice any changes you should consult your doctor immediately.

Rugby players and boxers are the best examples of what’s known as cauliflower ear.

Repeated injury causes a build up of fluid and swelling which left untreated can cause scar tissue.

CREASED LOBES

Possible cause: Heart disease

Diagonal creases across the ear lobes may be linked to cardiovascular problems, according to a study published in the British Heart Journal in 1989.

One theory is that they occur as a result of malformed blood vessels — replicating those supplying the heart. More likely is that the creases are a result of age, when heart disease is also more likely, says Dr Simpson:

:Watching more than two hours of TV a day could lead to an early death, claim researchers.:

They found that for every two hours of daily viewing, there was a 20 per cent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a 15 per cent higher risk of fatal or non-fatal heart disease and a 13 per cent higher risk of dying from any cause.

Lack of exercise and eating junk foods while watching TV are behind the increased risks, say researchers Dr Anders Grontved of the University of Southern Denmark and Dr Frank Hu of the Harvard School of Public Health.

Their findings, reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, come from an analysis of eight studies involving around 235,000 people.

Based on incidence rates in the U.S., the researchers estimated that, for every two hours of daily TV viewing, 178 extra people per 100,000 risked getting type 2 diabetes and 38 risked suffering from fatal cardiovascular disease, with 104 cases of ‘all-cause mortality’.

Maureen Talbot, of the British Heart Foundation, said: ‘This study adds yet more strength to existing evidence that sedentary activities, such as watching TV, could increase our risk of getting type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease.

I’m sure we’ve all lost evenings slumped on the sofa in front of the TV, snacking on crisps and biscuits and drinking sugary drinks or alcohol. But it’s important that this doesn’t become a regular activity.

‘We should try to be selective in how much time we spend watching TV, and try to be more active.

‘We need 30 minutes of physical activity at least five days a week to keep our hearts healthy:
Keseronokan berterawih setiap malam menjengah kembali.

Mula mula sekali cuci bilah kipas didinding. tengoklah berterbangan habuk halus yg terkumpul.

pintu pun cuci, frame, grill semua...

jangan lupa kunci pintu pagar masa buat kerja ni..

Buka pintu tingkap kasi udara masuk supaya lantai kering.

Back to the main story, jika ada plan nak cat apa apa buatlah dari sekarang.

Selamat menyambut bulan rejab.... beberapa minggu..kemudian puasa... insyaAllah..

Semoga semua sihat sentiasa....

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-770777891534953847.post-17126531039459679382011-06-12T00:50:00.002+08:002011-06-12T17:06:40.053+08:00.....bahagian...
Tadi dapat berita ibu mertua kawan yang berumur 90 tahun baru sahaja meninggal dunia pagi hari jumaat 405 pagi (bukan Islam). Beliau semasa hayat sangat berdikari.

Maka tabiat membaca dihentikan.

Malah bila masuk hospital rawatan pun cincai aja... iyalah pada mereka dia dah tua, enjin dah kondem.. bukan lagi top priority..
kalau orag bangsawan, berpangkat dan title masuk hospital sakit pening, title mereka menjaminkan rawatan dapat first class dan some level of decorum tu adalah. ada lah perhatian dan usaha yang diperlakukan...

Fikirkanlah..

jika kita tolak rasuah kita jangan lakukan walau seringgit pun. Dan lapurkan jika berlaku.
jika kita menolak croniisme, kita jangan lakukan tolong kawan kawan baik kita walaupun kita memberi peluang pada anak kawan satu alma mater kita.

jika yang berhutang belajar tu, memanglah gaji sikit, tapi kalau dah tertakluk kontrak kena bayar selepas tamat belajar kena la bayar. Negotiate lah bayar lah barang $5 sekali pun sebulan tak pe. Jangan dibiarkan ianya mengutip nilai interest dan mencari padah. Jangan lah mengikut perasaan maki hamun. Memang akad perjanjian sudah di tulis, duit dah terima makan minum bayar yuran etc. nak hidup berkat.. maka memang kena bayar. tapi bayaran kena lah bayar ikut kemampuan. kalau mampu berhandphone, internet di rumah, boleh lah bayar $5 sebulan.Bukan nya mereka menekan suruh bayar penuh, tapi buat bayaran balik in staggered amount. Mereka pasti menerima $5 walaupun kecil, pembayaran ini menunjukkan dilakukan in good faith dan penghutang berusaha mengambil inisiatif.

Adakah ini satu reforming of the character kaum kita?

:Boost your bones decade by decade...

By Annabel Venning

Our bones change as we age, and so do the ways we should look after them through the decades.

Diet and lifestyle in childhood can affect bone health in later life, determining the risk of developing joint disease such as arthritis and the thinning condition osteoporosis, while exercise is crucial in our later years.

Here, a spinal surgeon, a dietician and a rheumatologist from the Bone Health Centre at The Princess Grace Hospital in London give you all the guidance you need, whatever your age....

Frame game: perfectly poised Jerry Hall (centre) no doubt hands out valuable health and fitness advice to daughters Elizabeth Jagger (left) and Georgia May

Under ten years Bones provide body structure, protect organs, anchor muscles and store calcium, which is needed to aid the function of the nerves, muscles, kidneys and heart.

Childhood is a crucial time for skeletal health as bones are growing at their fastest.

'The body absorbs older bone and generates new bone material to keep our skeleton strong, but this process is most active in children and adolescents,' says Peter Hamlyn, consultant spinal surgeon.

'Calcium obtained from the diet - mainly dairy foods, but also wholegrains and dark green leafy vegetables - is needed to make bones hard.'

Children aged between one and three need 350mg calcium per day, and between age four and ten 450mg to 550mg. A medium yogurt provides 400mg and an average slice of bread 30mg. Up to the age of five, children should eat fullfat dairy products because they contain higher levels of fat for energy and fatsoluble Vitamins D and E.

Vitamin D, most plentifully produced in the skin after exposure to sunlight, aids calcium absorption.

'Without adequate levels, bones will not absorb enough calcium no matter how much is eaten,' says dietician Sarah Wilson. 'Breastfed babies will get sufficient amounts but while most formula milk is fortified, these infants should also be given drops containing Vitamin D as well as A and C. Speak to your GP for dose guidance.'

Rheumatologist Dr Gerard Hall says: 'Fear of exposing children to sunshine has led to a surge in rickets, the bone-softening disease. Once children can run around, they need 20 minutes of daily exposure to UV light during the summer without sunblock. Weight-bearing exercise - running and jumping - stimulates bone formation.'

TeensBones stop growing at the age of about 20 (although they will continue to increase in density after this) so it is essential to provide adequate nutrition to support new tissue formation during adolescence.

'Extreme dieting is a common problem among teenage girls, and some boys. Not only does a low body weight decrease bone density, but cutting out mineralrich dairy foods, often regarded as fatty, puts bones at greater risk of osteoporosis in later life,' says Wilson.

Boys need 1,000mg of calcium a day - equivalent to a pint of skimmed milk, an egg and two sardines. Girls need 800mg - a pint of skimmed milk and a small can of baked beans.

Protein is another major component of bone, and essential for growth. Teenagers need two or three moderate servings (chicken, meat, fish, pulses or tofu).

Drinking fizzy instead of more nourishing drinks can be bad for bones as we miss out on key nutrients.

Some think the acid in the added carbon dioxide enters the bloodstream and the body tries to neutralise it with calcium leached from the bones.

The 20s Final bone density is determined in this decade, but new-found independence means this is an age of excess for many, which may take a toll on skeletal health.

'Young adults need 700mg of calcium a day, and this requirement remains the same for the rest of life. Try to avoid salty convenience foods as they leach calcium from bones,' says Wilson.

'Two portions of oily fish a week top up Vitamin D levels.'

Too little sleep has also been shown to affect bone density. Those getting less than six hours each night are more likely to develop osteoporosis in later life.

This is because the body is not given adequate time to reduce the stress hormone cortisol in the bloodstream which promotes bone breakdown.

The 30s Breakdown of bone tissue overtakes growth, leading to a steady loss of density from this decade onwards. High stress levels and inactivity can exacerbate the deterioration.

'Excessive caffeine intake has been shown to compromise bone density. Have no more than five cups of coffee a day,' says Wilson.

'A packed lunch including a tinned salmon sandwich and a yogurt provides energy and contributes towards adequate levels of bonedensifying minerals.'

Pregnant women should ask their GP about supplements with Vitamins D and C and folic acid, which prevents spina bifida, a malformation of the foetal spine. However cod liver oil supplements are not recommended for pregnant women.

'Many pregnant mothers do not get enough calcium, which leads to the baby drawing what it needs from its mother, leaving her supplies depleted,' says Wilson.

Hall says: 'Jogging is renowned for its stress-busting effects, aiding bone-density retention, and there is no evidence that it promotes osteoarthritis.'

The 40s The amount of energy our bodies burn while resting drops by seven per cent, and by the same amount with every subsequent decade. Osteoarthritis - wear and tear of the joints, which affects two million British men and women - typically starts at this age, but can be prevented by making the right choices.

'Maintaining a healthy weight will also prevent future problems. A 10 lb weight gain can increase the risk of osteoarthritis of the knee by 40 per cent,' says Hall.

'If you are starting to suffer from joint pains, it is even more important that you take an omega3 supplement to dampen inflammation in the joints.

Other nutritional supplements, including glucosamine sulphate and chondroitin, may give some pain relief.

The 50s Women experience the menopause at this age, leading to a drop in the female hormone oestrogen, which is essential for bone retention.

Women should consider hormone replacement therapy, although a chemical that mimics oestrogen found in pulses and soya products may protect against joint and back pains.

'Drinking more than three units of alcohol a day - two small glasses of wine - can cause low bone density as the toxins in alcohol upset oestrogen and cortisol levels,' warns Dr Hall.

The body's ability to absorb minerals deteriorates by up to 25 per cent over the age of 60.

'Eating enough protein is also vital, especially for those recovering from jointreplacement surgery, because it helps tissue growth and repair,' says Wilson. 'Maintain a healthy weight, and that includes not losing too much as this will lead to low bone density and osteoporosis.'

Dr Hamlyn says: 'Keep using your muscles and bones to maintain them. Gentle walking or gardening helps you retain mobility. Anyone with a family history of osteoporosis, or who has broken a bone, should consider having a bonedensity scan after the age of 60.' :

A 20-year-old man has been accused of planting spyware on dozens of computers to secretly photograph naked women.

Computer technician Trevor Harwell was arrested on Wednesday at his home in Fullerton, California, where detectives allegedly found hundreds of thousands of the pictures on his computer.

Harwell is accused of installing the program, which gave him remote access to the user's computer and webcam, while working for a local computer repair company.

Harwell's neighbours in Fullerton, southern California, reported their suspicions

Fullerton Police Spokesman Sergeant Andrew Goodrich said: 'Once he had access, he would take photographs of the users, usually women. Often, the female victims were undressed or changing clothes.'

Harwell then allegedly stored the photos on a remote server and eventually downloaded them to his own computer.

Police say they began investigating him after a neighbour contacted authorities over a suspicious message on his daughter's computer.

The message mimicked a system error - telling her of a problem with an 'internal sensor' and advised: 'If unsure what to do, try putting your laptop near hot steam for several minutes to clean the sensor'.

Sgt Goodrich said many users who received similar messages took their laptops into the bathroom while they showered, enabling Harwell, allegedly, to photograph them undressing or naked.
THE SPY THAT HIDES IN YOUR PERSONAL COMPUTER

Spyware is a piece of malicious malware that can be installed on personal computers to collect information about users without their knowledge. They are notoriously difficult to detect.

Typically, they collect personal information, such as internet surfing habits and the addresses of sites that have been visited. But they can also interfere computers in other ways, such as installing additional software.

Spyware is known to change computer settings, resulting in slow connection speeds, incorrect home pages being displayed and, as in this case, redirecting web browser activity and flashing up false error messages.

In response to the threat of of the malicious software, a number of jurisdictions have passed anti-spyware laws.::

Contohnyna penggunaan cara seperti diatas adalah most effective way to control weeds, thereby reducing maintenance time. The pebbles dan landscape fabric etc will allow rainfall to reach the soil but will defer weed development.

Benefits of peb:bles etc

Improves moisture retention.

Reduces evaporation from the soil (for thriving plants)

Easy to distribute

Clean to handle

Improves soil by adding natural organic matter

Insulates against extremes of temperature.

Long lasting effects

insyaAllah..
